I am happy to say that as we approach WSR’s third anniversary in April, we have begun honoring our third annual series of advisors and leaders with the WSR Pathfinder Awards – Top Black Industry Leaders of 2024. For the second year, we also recognize an industry-changing organization that works to address and advocate for DEI initiatives in wealth management.

This month’s Pathfinder Awards winners are the most outstanding group yet, demonstrating both career excellence and commitment to initiatives that improve our industry. We also speak with four winners about their inspiration, career advice and the state of DEI in wealth management so that we can listen and improve as an industry.

In addition, we bring you our latest Deals & Recruiting Roundup; our monthly Marcoms Roundtable, in which three experts describe the changes and evolution of marcoms in wealth management; Smarsh’s acquisition of TeleMessage; and Stratos’ latest recruit.

Take five minutes to fill out our survey on the state of advisor technology and gain a chance to win a $250 Amazon gift card.

And the winners are: We honor the Top Black Industry Leaders of 2024 as the first installment of our Pathfinder Awards for the year, with winners in three categories: Organization of the Year, Financial Advisor Leaders, and Executives and Organizational Leaders.

Serving minority markets: Pathfinder Awards winner in the category of Financial Advisor Leaders, Delvin Joyce, Financial Planner at Prosperity Wealth Group, part of Prudential Advisors, discusses his passion for financial literacy, how advisors can better serve minority markets and how he chose a career in wealth management.

Where we must go: Pathfinder Awards winner in the category of Executives and Organizational Leaders, Lazetta Rainey Braxton, Founder and CEO of Lazetta & Associates and Co-CEO of 2050 Wealth Partners, discusses the “no fear, no shame zone,” her inspiration and how the wealth management industry must develop.

Demonstrating DEI success: Pathfinder Awards winner in the category of Executives and Organizational Leaders, Edward Walters, SVP, Executive Leadership Team – Business Transformation at Lincoln Financial Group, describes successful DEI initiatives, how his cousin inspired him to enter wealth management and career advice for Black students and early professionals.

Internships change the industry: Pathfinder Awards winner in the category of Financial Advisor Leaders, Chloé A. Moore, Co-Founder of BLX Internship Program and Founder of Financial Staples, discusses the goals and successes of BLX, career advice for women from underrepresented communities and steps our industry can take to improve.

Deals & Recruiting Roundup: Meet our newest Recruiter of the Month, Tony Montanari, SVP of Business Development at Prospera. This week we also cover Stratos Wealth Partners and Prospera Financial Services each onboarding a California-based firm, Allianz X and Constellation Wealth Capital investing in AlTi Global, Smarsh acquiring TeleMessage and Dynasty Financial Partners appointing Tim Oden as Executive-in-Residence.

The evolution of marcoms: In this month’s Marcoms Roundtable, we discuss the rapid changes and developments in marcoms over the past few years and how it will evolve, with Jimmy Moock, Managing Partner of StreetCred PR; Meg Carpenter, Founder and CEO of FiComm Partners; and Nicole Hakimi, SVP, Financial Services at Edelman Smithfield.

Regular checkups: Tolerisk CEO Mark Friedenthal compares financial health to medical care – making the case that routine checkups that include holistic risk reviews can reveal clients’ financial problems early when solutions are easier to manage.

Compliant mobile devices: Smarsh bolsters its mobile messaging and voice compliance capabilities with the acquisition of TeleMessage as the SEC’s scrutiny of off-channel communications grows. Smarsh CEO Kim Crawford Goodman and Chief Product Officer Goutam Nadella comment, as well as TeleMessage ex-CEO Guy Levit, who now joins Smarsh.

California recruit: Stratos Wealth Partners recruits $700 million California-based firm Pettinelli Financial Partners from Osaic’s Royal Alliance. Stratos will provide investment services as well as in-firm leadership transition support, as leadership transitions from Founder and Firm Ambassador Dennis Pettinelli to President Jon Pettinelli, both of whom provide comments. Stratos Founding Partner and Chief Development Officer Charles Shapiro also comments.
