We explain when and where the crucial events are scheduled to be held in 2023, along with who attends and why they show up. Our latest entry in the series, on Custodians, covers the annual Pershing INSITE and Schwab IMPACT events.
To be sure, at least 10 other custodians are currently serving the independent financial advisor space. These include Fidelity, the Schwab subsidiary TD Ameritrade Institutional, LPL Financial’s custody platform for RIAs, Goldman Sachs Advisor Solutions, the Wells Fargo affiliate First Clearing, Altruist and its Shareholders Service Group (SSG) subsidiary, Equity Advisor Solutions, APEX Clearing, Interactive Brokers and Axos Advisor Services.
Yet Pershing INSITE and Schwab IMPACT are the main annual custodian events that wealth management firms flock to year after year. If other custodians build out significant events in the future, WSR will add them to subsequent editions of our guide.
Pershing INSITE
The Bank of New York Mellon’s Pershing hosts its 25th annual Pershing INSITE conference from June 6 to June 8 in Orlando, Florida. It gathers more than 2,000 financial advisors, wealth management firm executives, fintech providers and other industry leaders from across the country for dozens of sessions on investing, practice management, technology and more. Approximately 35% of attendees are C-suite leaders. The audience breakdown is 45% from RIAs, 40% from broker-dealers and 15% from other financial institutions.
In addition, INSITE invites attendees to bring their families or friends along to stay at the Orlando World Center Marriott to experience parks, attractions and nightlife. Registration currently costs $799 for attendees and $299 for one additional adult guest. Pershing INSITE is primarily an in-person event, but some sessions will be livestreamed. The onsite Pavilion will showcase the Pershing X platform, an interconnected suite of advisory tools, investment advisory solutions and technology services.

Last year’s Pershing INSITE featured a Bloomberg Radio recording station onsite, a dining attraction with several cooked full-body alligators with the heads intact, and a financial career networking experience with more than 80 students from colleges and universities across the country. This year’s event features presentations by CAIS, T. Rowe Price, Capital Group, Morningstar, Transamerica, AssetMark, BlackRock, Nuveen, Envestnet, Addepar, Orion, PIMCO and others.
Main attractions on the 2023 agenda are keynotes with five-time NBA Champion Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Chairman and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises, and Rent the Runway Co-Founder and CEO Jennifer Hyman; as well as fireside chats with BNY Mellon President and CEO Robin Vince and Jay Clayton, former Chair of the SEC and Non-Executive Chair of Apollo Global Management. Sessions at this year’s Pershing INSITE include The Power of Your Tech Stack: Elevating the Advisor and Client Experience; Building Generational Wealth with Diverse Clients; and Recruiting Strategies: Advisors Got Talent.
Schwab IMPACT
Charles Schwab & Co. hosts its 2023 Schwab IMPACT conference from October 24 to October 26 in Philadelphia. Last year’s event reportedly gathered approximately 5,000 attendees, with roughly half of them being advisors. IMPACT is for independent RIA and independent recordkeeper clients of Charles Schwab & Co., including TD Ameritrade Institutional. Like INSITE, IMPACT focuses on staying on top of marketing and investment trends, maintaining strategic growth momentum, leveraging technology, and attracting and retaining top talent.
Advisors in attendance can receive continuing education credits for their Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation and from the Investments & Wealth Institute (IWI). Attendees encompass everyone from sole practitioners to members of RIA firms with dozens of employees. Their assets under management range from less than $25 million to more than $5 billion per firm. RIAs in attendance generally serve clients with $500,000 to $5 million in investable assets. Just over half of last year’s attendees were first-timers. For the 2022 Schwab IMPACT event, registration cost $1,375.

This year’s sponsors include T. Rowe Price, Franklin Templeton, BlackRock, Capital Group, KKR, Morningstar, Apollo, PIMCO, INVESCO, J.P. Morgan Asset Management, Goldman Sachs Asset Management and Raymond James Investment Management. This year’s agenda is still in the planning phase.
Last year’s IMPACT featured speeches by Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger, Schwab Co-Chairman of the Board and CEO Walter W. Bettinger II and Fannie Mae Chief Economist Douglas Duncan. Popular session topics were How to Tell Your Firm’s Story; Detecting Fraud & Cyber Crime; Navigating Today’s Global Risks and Opportunities; and Investing in Fixed Income in a Bear Market.
