Wealth Management Summer Internships Matter More Than Ever

Internships Create Opportunities to Showcase Our Industry, Recruit the Next Generation and Teach Students Though Real-World Experience

To My Fellow WSR Community Members:

Welcome back from the Fourth of July holiday weekend!

I often hear from friends that summer is their favorite time of year.

You might expect that from New Yorkers who enjoy moderate temperatures and long evenings, but even friends from the Desert Southwest (except our Contributing Editor and resident misanthrope James Miller) or humid Southern states enjoy family getaways, blockbuster movies and the more relaxed office atmosphere summer brings.

Hot but otherwise awesome!

And to be clear, that shifting of seasonal gears doesn’t mean we become less productive.  Rather, we accomplish productivity in different ways – And chief among them are the contributions we make to college students and other potential next gen professionals via summer internships.

The excitement and energy summer interns bring, as well as the occasional excuse for a nice lunch or baseball game, boosts morale, while helping us discover that inner inner teacher or mentor that exists for most seasoned professionals.

Yes, YOU are a teacher!

The interns give back to us not only with their energy and help, but in innovative suggestions, especially when it comes to marketing to and serving the next generation of clients.

Though conventions and events slow in summer, we talked to the CEO of one organization that designed a special virtual event for maximum effectiveness and flexibility to fit the needs of advisors and other professionals during this season.

This Week’s Issue

Here’s what we have in this week’s issue:

  • In our Beltway and Beyond section, Dale Brown, President and CEO of Financial Services Institute, tells us about FSI’s upcoming newly launched event, FSI Exchange, designed to share solutions and update the industry on a timely basis after so much occurred in the first half of 2022, while only taking three hours each day in a virtual format so busy executives on the road or with summer plans can attend.
  • Will the next generation of wealth management arise from summer internships? In a special Human Capital Roundtable in our Words in Edgewise section, we speak with Sarah Musante, Chief Human Resources Officer of Hightower, Jane Moyer, SVP, Chief Human Resources Officer atCommonwealth and  Mark Contey, SVP, Head of Business Development for LaSalle St. about their summer internship programs, including the impact on next-gen recruiting, the activities of the interns and how the interns give back.

As always, please share your questions, thoughts and ideas for future articles with us.

We’d love to hear your thoughts!

And for articles that resonate with you, please share via email or social media, including LinkedIn. It only takes a second!

Have a great week!

Cheers!
